The Four Heavenly Kings refer to the four guardian deities: Dhritarashtra (Eastern King), Virupaksha (Southern King), Virupaksha (Western King), and Vaishravana (Northern King). When the Buddha entered Nirvana, he instructed the Four Heavenly Kings to protect the Dharma. In traditional Chinese iconography, each of the Four Heavenly Kings often holds an object, symbolizing "wind, harmony, rain, and favorable weather," representing abundant harvests and peace throughout the land.

Holding a sword is a metaphor for "wind".

Playing the pipa by hand implies "tuning" or "harmonizing".

Holding an umbrella is a metaphor for "rain".

The one who captures the dragon is said to be "obedient".
